Icebreaker: What parade have you watched that was memorable for you? Have you ever been in a parade?
Read Luke 19:28-35. How close is Jesus to Jerusalem at this point (see v. 29. You might need a map). What assignment does Jesus give his two disciples here? What problems might they have encountered with such a job? Why do you think Jesus asked them to do this?
Read Luke 19:36-38. How do you picture the scene in these verses? What do you see? Hear? Feel? What were the people expecting Jesus to do when he reached Jerusalem (see v. 11, Zech. 9:9)? How are their expectations different from his?
Read Luke 19:39-44. What do you think Jesus was thinking and feeling when he spoke in verses 41-42? Why did he weep? What person or group of people do you weep over?
Read Luke 19:45-48. Why are Jesus’ actions so extreme here? Where do you think Jesus would “turn over the tables” in today’s world?
